NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 as it Applies to Pumps

Standards provide people and organizations with a basis for mutual understanding and are used as tools to facilitate communication, measurement, commerce, and manufacturing. For industries where there is very little room for mistakes, such standards bring consistency to the processes and products. That’s why, when it comes to pumps, several standards exist so all players involved – from production to installation – have expectations to fulfill.


Since 1986, the U.S. congress has been setting limits to the amount of lead present in public water systems or plumbing in facility producing water for human consumption. This is known as the Safe Drinking Water Act. Additional laws and standard have been put in place on lead limitation, including the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation)/ANSI (American National Standards Institute)/CAN 372, also known as NSF/ANSI/CAN 372.

 

Compliance to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for new manufactured product was required by September 1, 2023. Third party verification of compliance by an ANSI accredited certification body is required unless the manufacturer has less than ten employees. There is also a self-certification that can be done for customer fabricated parts. As a result, this new rule reduces lead in drinking water and assures that states, manufacturers, inspectors, and consumers have a common understanding of ‘Lead Free’ plumbing. This requirement impacts a number of A.Y. McDonald pumps.

 

Any pump and pump components that contact water that is intended for human consumption (potable water) now require third party certification to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372. This includes the following A.Y. McDonald provided pumps:

 

Pumps that do not contact water intended for human consumption (non-potable water) will NOT be required to comply with NSF/ANSI/CAN 372. This includes the following:

 

Any pump used to deliver water for the purpose of human consumption (potable) must not contain more than weighted average of 0.25% lead. In many cases, products are already meeting requirements needed to be certified. In that instance, the product will need to be certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 by a third party but there will be no physical changes to the pump itself.
